On Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017 longtime Canton resident, Ronie Wayne Nelson passed away quietly at Geisinger Medical Center, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.  He was 64 years of age.   Born March 28th, 1953 in Minot, North Dakota, he was  one of ten children in the family of  Duane and Clarice (Sundbakken) Nelson.  After graduating from high school Ron enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1972 to 1976 as a medical corpsman.  While in the Navy Ron met Karen Eckersley, and  on September 10th, 1978 they were married.  Following his service to our country Ron earned a B.S. degree in accounting.  Over the years he was employed as an accountant for the former Eastern Best Products in Canton,   the Staiman Recycling Corporation in Williamsport and the former Orthstar Co. in Horseheads NY.  Later he worked as a truck driver.   He was a former member of the Canton Lions’ Club and the Wheel Inn Club.  Ron was a soft spoken, laid back kind of person who made friends easily and was always there to lend a hand.  He  enjoyed the simple things in life; watching football and being  with his beloved family.

Ron is survived by his wife of almost 39 years, Karen, at home, daughter Danielle Marnati and her children Emalie and Byron, of Canton, son Joshua (& Christina) Nelson and their children  Gregory, Caleb, Madelynn, Makayla and Aiden, of South Williamsport, brothers Clyde (& Bonnie) Nelson, Gaylen Nelson, Richard (& Jennifer) Nelson, sisters Diana (& Bobby) Jans, Bernadine Martin,  Amy (& Harlan) Helm, Caryn (& Gary) Jorgensen,  Joyce (& Gene) Schoenberg and Denice Nelson, special friends Tesa (& Jody) Route, Andy (& Sherry) Spencer, Gary (& Linda) Anderson and Jim (& Linda) Bailey, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Clarice Nelson.
