Marceil (Packard) Griswold

November 4, 1918 ~ January 9, 2016 (age 97) 97 Years Old

MARCEIL P. GRISWOLD

Marceil Packard Griswold  passed away on January 9 of this year at the age of ninety seven.  Marceil was married to Scott W. Griswold for 72 years.  They had two children, Nan Corsello of Skaneateles, NY and Scott Griswold, Jr. of Petersburg, NJ.  Marceil and Scott had 6  grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Marceil was born near Troy, Pa November 4, 1918 to Eva (Preston) and Dolson Packard  and predeceased by her husband and a sister, Marge  Aldredge.  Marcy (her friends called her) graduated from Canton High School in 1936 and Ohio University to become an elementary school teacher; a profession she loved.  Marceil and Scott lived in Cleveland Ohio, then Moorestown, NJ, Haddonfield, NJ then returned home to Canton, PA to raise their children in their hometown.  Marceil and Scott lived at Country Terrace in Wellsboro, PA until passing.

Marceil had a gift for selling. One winter, she worked in sales for Worldbook Encyclopedia to make some extra money and ended up the top producer in the USA!  Later in their lives, Marceil encouraged her husband Scott (then a public school art teacher) to paint portraits which changed their lives forever. Marceil’s sales gifts evolved with her representing Scott’s artwork nationwide securing clients of the likes of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, George Steinbrenner, Charles Bronson and others. Probably her grandest moment as a promoter was to hand deliver her husband’s portraits to Bill Clinton at the White house on one Christmas Day evening where Scott and Marcy met with the President, privately, for nearly an hour.

Marceil never gave up on any project she felt worthwhile and would approach anyone, regardless of their notoriety with a proposal for an art commission.  Her son describes his mother as fearless.  Her children and grandchildren miss her greatly and have been enriched by Marceil’s love of life, of her energy and by the example of her work ethic.

Friends may meet the family at the Church of Christ, Disciples in Canton Pa between 11:00 and noon on Saturday, January 16th.  In Lieu of flowers, the family  suggest donations to be made to a favorite charity in Marceil’s name.  Burial will be private.
