George Wilcox Obituary

GEORGE D. WILCOX

During the early morning of Monday, January 29th, 2018, lifelong Leroy resident, George D. Wilcox passed away peacefully at Bradford County Manor. He was 87 years of age. Born in Leroy on June 12, 1930, he was the son of Earl and Hattie (Haflett) Wilcox. George was a 1948 graduate of Canton High School and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Bobbee Spencer, and together they raised two sons and a daughter. George was employed in the dairy industry for forty-six years as a dairy barn inspector and as a dairy farmer in partnership with his brother at Fivebrooks Farm in Leroy. He was a life member of the Innes Hose Company and served as an active firefighter for a number of years. George also served a number of terms as a member and officer of the Canton Area School Board. He was an active member of the Deer Crossing Detachment of the Marine Corps League. George was also a man who knew and loved his Lord Jesus, and was a longtime, faithful and active member of the Canton Ecumenical Parish.

George enjoyed hunting with his sons at the family cabin, tending his lawn and beautiful flowerbeds, and wintering in Cape Canaveral. He particularly enjoyed reading local and military history, was a Civil War re-enactor serving as lieutenant with the 141st Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was a member and volunteer at both the Leroy Heritage Museum and the Bradford County Farm Museum in Troy. He was a man who enjoyed people of all ages and made friends easily. He possessed a great sense of humor and could play tricks and equally enjoyed being tricked. Despite his busy schedule, he took the time to teach his children outdoor skills, a great love and respect for nature and "the mountain" and the value of hard work. He was always supportive of his children's and grandchildren's activities and enjoyed watching them. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbee, at home; sons Jared (& Rebecca) Wilcox of Leroy and Jan (& Marcia) Wilcox of Elizabethtown, PA; daughter, Leigh Ann (& Neil) Leary of Virginia Beach, VA; brother Duane (& Carrie) Wilcox of Leroy; grandchildren Skylar (& Nichole) Wilcox, Jaryn (& Stephen) Gustafson, Jenny (& Orlando) Archuleta, Emily Wilcox, Connor Leary, Patrick Leary; great-grandchildren London, Emerson, and Myles Archuleta as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Hattie Wilcox and child sister, Janice Wilcox. Visitation will be 12 noon Friday, February 2, at the Canton Ecumenical Parish, 103 N. Center Street, Canton. Service will follow at 1 pm with the Rev. Jerry Schmidt officiating. The family will provide the flowers and suggest that memorial contributions be directed to the Canton Ecumenical Parish Memorial Fund.
